    What is prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy is a non-surgical treatment which helps stimulate the
body to heal painful joints.  Prolotherapy is also known as "non-
surgical ligament reconstruction" and "regenerative injection
therapy."  Prolo is short for "proliferation," because the technique
causes the proliferation (or growth) of new ligament and tendon
    tissue.

Joints are where two bones come together to provide motion.  Joints
are held together and stabilized by ligaments and tendons.
Ligaments are rubber-band like tissue which connect one bone to
another bone in a joint.  Tendons are the end portion of a muscle
which connects that muscle to the joint in order to provide motion.

Ligament and tendon weakness is a common cause of chronic
pain.  During an injury, repetitive overuse, or just in the wear and
tear of daily life, these tissues may be injured and not heal
completely, causing recurrent or constant pain.  Prolotherapy can
    help.

    What conditions does prolotherapy treat?

Prolotherapy may used to treat joint related painful conditions such
    as:
  • neck pain
  • shoulder pain or rotator cuff injury
  • tennis or golfer's elbow
  • wrist pain
  • low back pain
  • sciatica
  • hip pain
  • knee pain
  • ankle injury and plantar fasciitis
  • osteoarthritis pain
  • fibromyalgia
and other musculo-skeletal pain.  To determine whether you are a
candidate for prolotherapy treatment, you may contact Dr. Gheen's
    office to schedule a consultation.

    What does prolotherapy do?

Prolotherapy creates a local inflammatory response at the site of
injured or painful tissue, stimulating blood flow and reactivating the
healing process.  It stimulates the growth of new collagen, which is
the building block of healthy ligaments and tendons.

How can I learn more about prolotherapy?

Dr. Gheen encourages you to learn more about prolotherapy on
your own, or call her offices for more information or to schedule a
consultation.  You may also seek out books, articles, and web sites
that have information on the procedure.  Two web sites that you
